This is the series that features statistics and your favourite teams! What a great way to learn math! Today we're going to investigate the trouble with the Cleveland Browns (0-11). We need to find out what is wrong with this team as they look to get their first win tomorrow vs. the Giants. What is wrong with the Cleveland Browns? We need to find out and compare opponents' performances against them to see if their ability is higher than what the Browns have. How do we set this up? By stating the hypotheses! HypothesesNull: The Browns' opponents had the same ability against them. Alternative: The Browns' opponents had a higher ability when facing them. SimulationsThe stats for the opponents were found on pro-football-reference.com and I chose to use the amount of points scored (325) out of total offensive plays (742). The winning percentage for that was .438. Test statistic= 325 P-value= .53 Verdict= A higher ability is not plausible because the p-value is not below .5 but we conducted more trials and saw the p-value increase, which means they most likely have the same ability. For more fun, let's see how the Browns did! They'e scored 184 points from 661 total offensive plays, which gives them .278 as a winning percentage. Test Statistic= 184 P-value= .43 Uh-oh! Looks like the Browns may have a lower ability than they should. ConclusionThis may sound obvious but the trouble with the Browns is that they need to score more because defense is not allowing teams to be higher than their ability. Offense is performing at a low standard and needs to step it up.
Hope this team gets at least one win and then the 49ers get two wins so they can get 1st overall. Leave a Reply. |
