Instead of doing simulations today, I decided to help you (and myself) further understand a confusing statistic that gets thrown around a lot. If you guessed WAR (Wins Above Replacement), then you are correct! If you already understand this, follow along to see if this is a good explanation. Here we go: Literal Definition from FanGraphs:"Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is an attempt by the sabermetric baseball community to summarize a player’s total contributions to their team in one statistic." How can you know this idea? Their example was good enough to help me out, so I will do something similar to it. It is supposed to tell you how many games a team may lose if their player is injured. An All-Star level player would be worth around 5 to 7 wins, if they were ever out. Ways to Calculate WAR:Of course, there are two different ways because of how different batters and pitchers are which brings us to what stats are used in these calculations: Batters: WAR = (Batting Runs + Base Running Runs +Fielding Runs + Positional Adjustment + League Adjustment +Replacement Runs) / (Runs Per Win) Pitchers: This one is much more complex but for pitchers, you need to calculate how many infield fly balls there are in a specific park, then see how many innings they threw. Then those infield fly balls are changed to runs and then to wins. If you really want to know more about this, go here. *Formulas courtesy of FanGraphs* Reminders:
Here's How to Remember If Your Player is Valuable or Not Through These Standards: Eh: 0-1 WAR Utility: 1-2 WAR Starter: 2-3 WAR Good: 3-4 WAR All-Star: 4-5 WAR Superstar: 5-6 WAR MVP: 6+ WAR (*standards from FanGraphs*) There's so much more to this statistic, but here's who is actually succeeding in it right now: A.L.
