This is the series that features statistics and your favourite teams! What a great way to learn math! Since Carey Price is off to a hot start (10-1) I decided that it was time to test this somehow. For this situation, I will measure his streakiness from this season to his award-winning season in 2014-15. The question would be: Was Carey Price more streaky in 2014-15 or 2016? HypothesesNull: Price was not streaky and his outcomes were independent. P-value > .05 Alternative: Price was streaky and had the hot hand. P-value < .05 *Reminder: Test statistic for this would be the longest streak and it helps to determine the p-value. We want to see how many times we can get the longest streak to see if this is streaky or not because our fraction determines a large or small p-value. Simulation2014-2015 For this, I had to copy his record in his first 11 games (ssfsssssfff) and then see how long his streaks were compared to the test statistic: 5. I found out that 22 out of 100 were 5 or above which makes it .22. If the number is less than 5%, Price was streaky. Since .22 is not less, we can conclude that the null is plausible. 2016 His record so far is ssssssssssf but *spoiler* he was not streaky! Only 19 simulations had streaks of 10 or higher, which was our test statistic. Therefore, it is plausible that he was NOT streaky in this stretch. ConclusionCarey Price was most likely not on a streak! Why? We need to expand our sample size! If we did the entire 2014-15 season then we could really tell. Don't worry right now because I will investigate Price more as the season goes on.
As for now, I can confirm that his start right now is better than it was when he won every award. Keep your eyes and ears ready for him! Leave a Reply. |
