“I would hear from other people, 'Girls shouldn't play sports.' That never stopped me. Skateboarding is the ultimate freedom. I wake up when I step on my skateboard. All my thoughts and worries go away when I ride.” -Ashley, age 27 “The boundaries I push in powerlifting, and sports, is something I choose purely for me. I tell women that being afraid only means there's potential on the other side.” -Vicky, age 28. “I love sport because it does not focus on beauty. You are supposed to get dirty, sweaty and play with all your heart. And playing soccer makes me feel powerful and graceful at the same time.” -Emebet, soccer player, age 17 Find out more on why some athletes like Emebet play the game below:
March is National Women's History Month, which means that all stats this month will be about women! Hope you enjoy these historical athletes! Which year was faster: 1988 or 2012?For this experiment I will compare two different Olympic performances in the 100 meters. The reason being is because the World Record/Olympic Record was set by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988 while the World Record in 2012 was set by Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce in the Olympics. We will find out which performance was set more apart from the rest of the group by standardizing their times and seeing how many standard deviations they are from the average. 1988 ResultsMean: 10.98 Standard Deviation: 0.28 Joyner's z-score: -1.57 2012 ResultsMean: 10.87 Standard Deviation: 0.09 Fraser-Pryce's z-score: -1.33 Results InterpretedWhile Fraser-Pryce went against much faster competition, Joyner still stood out more and was a little more standard deviations away from everyone else. Joyner still remains the fastest in the world and we can see why. Looks like that 2012 was a faster year but 1988 showed us the fastest we have seen so far.
"I love the feeling of accomplishment. First of all, I love to run. If running was an illegal drug, I'd be in the program. I'm addicted to it." -Lisa Davis "If you really want something, you can do it. That's how I was raised; Just because you're a girl doesn't mean you can't do something that you want to. You can do anything that you set your mind to if you try hard enough." -Ashlee Burdg "I want to be that for girls. I want to get to the point where it's not rare [because] I'd like to see a female drum major at every school or at least trying out. When I see more female drum majors on the field and getting recognition, I know I've done my job." -NaKia Bryant "I learned after my freshman year not to let pressure get to me. I love lacrosse and I love playing it. Being confident made all the difference in the world." -Marie McCool |
AuthorHi, I'm Jenna and I'm a sports fan! I've been avidly watching sports since 2011 because I found that by watching sports, I would be able to communicate with my dad and brother better. Ever since I got into sports, I've been able to enjoy myself more when I go to sporting events with my family. Archives
