March is National Women's History Month, which means that all stats this month will be about women! Hope you enjoy these historical athletes! Which year was faster: 1988 or 2012?For this experiment I will compare two different Olympic performances in the 100 meters. The reason being is because the World Record/Olympic Record was set by Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988 while the World Record in 2012 was set by Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce in the Olympics. We will find out which performance was set more apart from the rest of the group by standardizing their times and seeing how many standard deviations they are from the average. 1988 ResultsMean: 10.98 Standard Deviation: 0.28 Joyner's z-score: -1.57 2012 ResultsMean: 10.87 Standard Deviation: 0.09 Fraser-Pryce's z-score: -1.33 Results InterpretedWhile Fraser-Pryce went against much faster competition, Joyner still stood out more and was a little more standard deviations away from everyone else. Joyner still remains the fastest in the world and we can see why. Looks like that 2012 was a faster year but 1988 showed us the fastest we have seen so far.

AuthorHi, I'm Jenna and I'm a sports fan! I've been avidly watching sports since 2011 because I found that by watching sports, I would be able to communicate with my dad and brother better. Ever since I got into sports, I've been able to enjoy myself more when I go to sporting events with my family. Archives
