Welcome to Houston for this week's edition of Sports Staturday! Is Brock Osweiler worth $72 million?Osweiler is 6-6 in his starts this year while he was 5-2 last year with Denver. After his successful season as a backup, Houston was ready to crown him as their starter and did so with a $72 million dollar contract. Some may think that it is too much for a backup to be paid that while others think that he is the guy Houstonneeded. This investigation will compare his completion percentages from his starts from last season to this season. HypothesesNull: Osweiler's ability this season is the same that it was last season. (He deserves the money). Alternative: Osweiler's ability this year dropped off from last season's. (He is overpaid). SimulationIn order to investigate the data, the data from 2015 (Context 1) should be entered and then the data from 2016 (Context 2). The means from each will be calculated and the difference equals the test statistic. This will determine our p-value. 400 trials later and the p-value is 21%. It's time for a conclusion. ConclusionGood news for Brock! He has the same ability as last year (at least for his passing) and fans should not worry. Maybe the targets he has aren't good enough to win games or maybe the defense can't help him like last year. Fans can lay off of him because he is producing what the Texans saw from him last year.
“I don’t want to be angry anymore. I spent so much of life being bitter and angry and frustrated. Now my purpose is about love and acceptance and how can we fix it.” -Brenda Tracy "If you want it, create it. I worked hard to become a Grand Slam champ. I’m not finished yet." -Angelique Kerber “I think any racing opportunity you get is one to learn from. Knowing that one of the first international competitions for me was the Olympics, knowing that, don’t put limits on yourself. Do what you’ve been working on in training and it will get you to the sky.” -Kylie Masse "I wanted to stop, but I was like 'Oh my gosh, the ball is still in our half. I cannot let them score, because I did not get hit in the face for nothing.' And so, I was just trying to get myself sorted out. I didn't want to take that for nothing." -Kayla Mills, after taking a shot to the face in the NCAA championship game for soccer. "I came from a situation where it was very intense and very upsetting and you didn't feel comfortable playing. You didn't feel like you did anything right and you felt kind of worthless. We came here, and they made me confident again. I was actually getting to the point where I wanted to quit because that's how much I hated soccer. And it wasn't because I actually hated the game. ... I think this coaching staff [at USC] did an amazing job bringing these players that came from a similar situation that I did and bringing them back to a place mentally where they believe they're good players. Because they are good players." -Sammy Jo Prudhomme "Talking to each other and opening up doesn't make you weak or vulnerable. It makes you even stronger a lot of the time." -Madison Keys Happy Saturday! It's time to learn! Is Tuukka Rask playing above his ability from last year? HypothesesNull: Rask has the same ability this season as he did last season. Alternative: Rask has a higher ability this season than last season. *Remember that 5% or lower proves the alternative plausible. What type of simulation this is:This simulation covers a single performance (in this case, Rask's save percentage from last season) and sees how that ability would do with the amount of attempts from so far this year (455). When the simulation was conducted, the p-value was to be found after how many simulations were after his ability this season. Since he was able to save 427 shots, the numbers after had to be counted. In 100 trials, 5 simulations had Rask stopping more than 427 shots with his save percentage from last season. To go further, I added 100 more trials to see if the p-value gets larger or smaller. In 200 trials, Rask would only be able to stop 427 or more shots in 7 of those trials. The 3.5% shows that his ability from last year is not what it is this year. ConclusionGood news, Bruins fans! Your goalie is doing much better than he would last year! With a small p-value, the null hypothesis is rejected and Rask is not the same from last year (which is good!). The only thing with that statement is that it's early in the season still and Rask needs to play more to see if he still has a greater ability to save.
"It is cool to see my name at the top of the leaderboard. I don't want to get greedy, but I want to get to 20 under. I really want to work on my course management over the final two days." -Nasa Hataoka, Japanese 17 year-old who leads the LPGA qualifying tournament right now. "She is a soccer mind. She's commanding. She knows where everyone needs to be. She's directing, she's orchestrating. Coaches will always tell you that they need great leadership to be successful, and that's exactly what we have in Keisha back there." -Nikki Izzo-Brown, on Kadeisha Buchanan, espnw player of the year for ncaa soccer. |
