This week's report is starting off with an awesome newbie to the newbie group... "It's been crazy — obviously a heartbreak loss there with my North Dakota team, But, you know, I had to regroup there and focus on this game. I definitely think adrenaline kicked in here." -Brock Boeser, Overnight success. Brock BoeserSeason with North Dakota ends? Check. Signs contract with Vancouver Canucks? Check. Debuts in the NHL? Check. Faces hometown team? Check. Parents in attendance? Check. Scores first NHL goal? Check. Game winner? Check. 18th player in franchise history to do so? Check. This was exactly what Boeser's 24 hours looked like and if it does not get any better than that for a college student, not sure what else could top it. This is a happy moment for both Boeser and the Canucks as they both find silver linings in rough seasons. Good luck to Boeser on the remainder of the season as tonight will be something he will never forget! Toronto Maple Leafs Rookie Trio Mitch MarnerMarner added assists #39 and #40 this week vs. Boston and New Jersey. At 40 assists, Marner is tied for the most assists by a rookie in Leafs history and leads all rookies in the league for this category. He is tied for second with 31 points since Jan. 1 for all rookies. Auston MatthewsHit 'em with the 34 like Auston Matthews... Matthews has had a good week with 5 points in 4 games (2 G, 3 A), including the goal that tied him for the lead in rookie goals and points (34 G, 61 P). It pays to assist because being up there in points is where it takes you. Matthews is the person tied with Marner mentioned above for 31 points since Jan. 1. With his 34th goal of the season, Matthews ties Wendel Clark for most rookie goals by a Leafs player. We are witnessing the best Leafs rookie yet. William NylanderWE'RE GOING STREAKING!!!! *please don't jinx him now!* This week alone Nylander had 6 points in 4 games (3 G, 3 A). He has had 13 points during his entire 11 game point streak. To say he is on fire would be the least way to describe his game right now. Nylander has had 33 points in 39 games since Jan. 1, the most for all rookies in that time. 2017 has been good to him. Patrik LaineLaine's only goal this week was enough to keep him at the top with Matthews for both goals and points. Jets have 5 players with 20+ goals, second most in the NHL. The Jets are farther behind in the playoff race after losses this week in California but maybe that offense can come back? With Laine in one of your lines, you have a good shot, one that makes it right in the net. P.S. Want to see okay quality pictures of Laine this week that I took? Here they are anyways! I definitely was awestruck but who wouldn't be?! He's one of the best in the game right now and he's still 18! Zach WerenskiWerenski netted his 36th assist vs. Toronto this week and now has 47 points (11 G, 36 A). At 47 points, he holds the most rookie points in Blue Jackets' history. Werenski also has a +20 overall and leads all rookies. He leads rookie defensemen in scoring and is fourth overall players. He is tied with Nylander for second in assists and again leads the defensemen in that category along with goals. In NHL history, Werenski ranks eighth in points by a teenage defenseman. Aaron Ekblad had 39 when he won the Calder. Sebastian AhoAho is back to his goal scoring ways this week! After being goalless since his two goal game on March 9th, Aho had 3 goals in 3 games this week. He had two multipoint games of those three also. At 23 goals, Aho can thank his two goal game at New Jersey for being third in rookie goals. He also was named First Star of the Game after scoring both the opening and closing goal of the 3-1 victory. Anthony ManthaIt's been awhile since we've checked up on Mantha but I am glad to report that he is doing fine. This week he scored his 15th goal of the season, an amazing OT winner, and is now at 34 points (15 G, 19 A). He is eighth among rookies in points and ninth in goals. He also is +11 which is nice for the Wings who could use as much positivity this year as they can get. Good luck to Mantha as the season unfolds at the Joe. Highlights: "Sebastian Aho is a winner."
