Happy All-Star Weekend! Enjoy today's edition where the problem being solved has to do with tonight's Skills Competition. *Hint: This will be fast!* Is the Eastern or Western Conference faster in the fastest skater competition?East: 12 fastest skater winners from 1992-2016 competitions. (Average time= 13.636) West: 7 fastest skater winners from that same span. (Average time= 14.147) Mean Difference= -0.511HypothesesNull: Both Conferences have the SAME ability in the Fastest Skater Competition. (Value > 5%) Alternative: The Eastern Conference has a greater ability in the Fastest Skater Competition. (Value < 5%) SimulationThe test statistic that was used to see where our p-value was is from the mean difference above. P-Value= 0.5% out of 200 trials; very small value. ConclusionIt is plausible that the Eastern Conference has a greater ability in the Fastest Skater Competition. One of the reasons could be that they have more people on the list and another could be that the Eastern Conference focuses more on speed rather than skill or strength. Some interesting things to think about while you watch today.
