Happy Canada Day! In honour of this holiday, here are 10 current Canadian stars! Sorry that we could not include everyone but that means that Canada has many famous athletes! P.S. For some reason the date will not change to 7/1 and that upsets me.. sorry about the inconvenience. PK SubbanThis one is a sad one for Habs fans because he really helped out the surrounding community, especially the children in the hospital. It breaks my heart that he has to leave them behind because they will be devastated to see their hero leave. I have high hopes that he does well in Nashville and will continue to help more lives! Also, Pernell Karl (his real name!) represents what every Canadian and human should be like. He is kind, caring, and passionate. He lives a wonderful life that is balanced with giving back and seeing the world. He also is very family-oriented and never forgets who got him to where he is now. He is a proud Canadian and Canada will always be proud to have him (unless you're the Canadiens GM who ruined that). Sidney CrosbyWhere to begin with this one? 2010 is a year that Canadians will never forget, thanks to this amazing man. He is a fantastic leader; he's lead winning teams to Olympic and World Championship gold medals and the Stanley Cup (twice!). We'll see what he does in the World Cup but I have a feeling that his team will feel very confident having him as a leader. Crosby also respects his roots in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In his Tim Hortons commercials, he did mention about his hometown which is major for that town to have a superstar remember where he came from. Not every athlete is willing to share about their hometown but Crosby knows that he represents both Halifax, Nova Scotia and Canada and he embraces it. Brent BurnsOne of-if not the most-interesting players in the NHL. I've read several pieces on him and each teaches me something new and surprising about him. You may know these facts already but did you know that he prefers to drive a huge van instead of a luxury car? His car of choice comes in handy when he takes his family on cross country road trips every summer. While on the road trips, he likes to ride his bike for about 30 miles to stay in shape and build endurance for the long amount of minutes he spends on the ice every season. He also used to have a LARGE collection of snakes (he once had 150+ but had to leave them behind in Minnesota). Another striking fact was about his tattoo. Which one, you may ask... well, he has a tattoo of a hockey stick with the Canadian flag attached to it. This tattoo was his 11th birthday present from his father. Yes. 11TH. I read about this on nhl.com. They can't be lying, right?! So, what better way to celebrate the holiday with his awesome tattoo? ! Carey PriceWe missed a good amount of Price this season due to injury but his career so far has been great. Individually, he's won the Hart, Vezina, Lindsay, and Jennings trophy (in ONE season!). As a team, he's won the gold medal with Canada in 2014. He would be considered one of the best goaltenders in the world at that time and there's good evidence to support that claim. Price is also special because he is a role model to First Nations people in Canada (he is of the Ulkatcho First Nation). His success in hockey has shown First Nations boys that they too can be successful if they work hard. In his Vezina acceptance speech, he said, "I would like to take a moment to encourage First Nations youth. People would say it's very improbable that I'd make it to this point in my life; I made it here because I wasn't discouraged. I worked hard to get here, took advantage of every opportunity that I had. And I would really like to encourage First Nations youth to be leaders in their communities. Be proud of your heritage, and don't be discouraged from the improbable." Encouraging words from a person who will impact his people for a long time. Andrew WigginsThe number one overall draft pick in 2014 has not failed as previous picks have. Even though he was traded by the Cavaliers right away, he has done well in Minnesota and became the Rooki of the Year. Minnesota is still developing but they will soon be a team to watch thanks to Wiggins and company. Wiggins has also competed in several global tournaments and won bronze in the 2015 FIBA Americas tournament. Unfortunately, Wiggins will not compete in the Olympics but he will continue to make Canada proud as he becomes a bigger threat in the NBA. Christine SinclairCanada's best soccer player is also considered the best in the world. With 161 goals (the most for Canadian National Teams), it is hard to dispute that claim. In the 2012 Summer Olympics, she led in scoring and won bronze (her only Olympic medal so far). Sinclair has been on the team for a long time, she was invited to the senior team at age 15 and became an offensive weapon at 16 (she's 33!), and she continues her dominance as captain. This year at Rio will be a good shot for Canada to medal again because they can count on her. In 2013, she was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. She is a true Canadian icon and will always be remembered by many Canadian sports fans. In the World Cup last year, she was the dominant face in the campaign. The whole country united behind her to support their women in the chance of winning it all on home soil. Unfortunately they did not win, but women's sports won in how popular it became in the country. Sinclair is an icon to Canadian girls playing sports because they have someone to look up to that is revered by many. Kadeisha BuchananThe defender for the Canadian National Team stood out last year at the World Cup at 19 years of age. She will be returning this year in Rio and will help defend Canada's chances of winning a medal. Buchanan previously played for West Virginia and studied law and criminology but is taking time off to prepare for Rio. Buchanan made her national team debut at age 17 and won the Young Player Award at the World Cup. The future for the team is in good hands with Buchanan as a defender. Shannon SzabadosSzabados is a role model for all women because she is not afraid to take on male competitors. Most of her career has been spent playing with and against men and she has excelled at it. She competed against them as early as age 9 at the Brick Super Novice Tournament and later became the first female in the Western Hockey League and the Alberta Junior Hockey League. After her junior hockey career, she played for men's collegiate teams and then played for the National Team. On the National Team, she won 2 gold medals and was named the top goaltender in 2010. One year after her Olympic win in Sochi, she became the first woman to record a shutout in a men's professional league (Southern Professional Hockey League) in 2015. Another amazing part about that game is that she made 33 saves! Szabados is an amazing player no matter who she's playing against and proves to women of all ages that they can do anything with hard work. Marie-Philip PoulinCaptain Poulin won two gold Olympic medals and scored the winning goals in both gold medal finals. Poulin made her debut for Team Canada at the age of 16 and climbed her way up the scoring lists. Poulin is a member of the Triple Gold Club (Olympic gold medal, IIHF World Championship gold medal, and Clarkson Cup) after she won at the 2012 IIHF World Championship in which she had a hat trick against Russia in the final game. She returned to the CWHL in 2015, after leaving for Boston University, and became the top points leader in the league. Poulin is one of the best players on the Canadian team right now and is only 25. She has many great years left and will lead Canada win more future tournaments. Brooke HendersonCanada's top golfer is 18 year-old phenom, Henderson. She is the recipient of the 2015 Canadian Press Female Athlete of the Year.
At 18, she became the youngest winner at the Women's PGA Championship and moved up to second in world rankings. Henderson became the first Canadian to win a golf major in 48 years. She is helping her country by bringing their name back to the golf world with her success at a young age. July 19th is the day that Canada is supposed to nominate their golfers for the Rio Olympics. Henderson is expected to be named to the Olympic team and hopefully she will medal for Canada in an event that has not been in the Olympics since 1904! 4/2/2024 12:06:57 am

AuthorHi, I'm Jenna and I'm a sports fan! I've been avidly watching sports since 2011 because I found that by watching sports, I would be able to communicate with my dad and brother better. Ever since I got into sports, I've been able to enjoy myself more when I go to sporting events with my family. Archives
