Here are some things you need to know about this team: 1. The Seahawks joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1976. 2. One major reason that the Seahawks have a huge fanbase is because they are the only football team in the Pacific Northwest. Fans can come from Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska (!!), and even British Columbia (Victoria, BC is a ferry ride away from Seattle). 3. The 12th Man set the record for loudest crowd noise at a sporting event with 137. 6 dB. They lost the record to Chiefs fans in 2014 as they hit 142. 2 dB. Could only find the older record of 131.. 4. They have played in both AFC and NFC Championship games, making them the only team to do so in the league. They came into the league in the NFC West but then switched to the AFC West in 1977 in order for them to play all 30 teams and the other expansion team, Tampa Bay. 5. So far, they are the only post-merger expansion team to go to consecutive Super Bowls. Talk about a great and consistent team because obviously there is nothing easy about getting to the Super Bowl. They could have went this year but they were unable to make the complete comeback. 6. The Seahawks fans have been causing earthquakes since 2010. When Marshawn Lynch broke out and ran for a 67 yard TD against the Saints in the 2010 playoffs, the fans reacted so loudly that they cause an earthquake a little higher than 2 on the Richter scale. Small earthquake but still a big deal. 7. Has it always been that loud? Yes, even back to the Kingdome days, opposing fans would have to prepare themselves with loud rock music in order to simulate what the crowd there would sound like. 8. A major reason that the noise is so loud is because the stadium's partial roof design amplifies the noise and brings it back to the field. This definitely causes problems for the opposing team and they definitely have false start penalties when they play there. The only way to beat the noise, because you really can't ignore it, is to develop a great system of hand signals. That's why only the best teams win in Seattle. 9. From the second week of 2003 on, the crowd at CenturyLink has been a sellout! Now, many people call these fans bandwagoners but like all teams, not everyone there is a bandwagoner. Some people were born into the good years, some have gone through the beginning to now, and some live in the surrounding area. There definitely are bandwagon fans because all teams with great recent success have those. But the fact is that football is and has been king in Seattle for a long time (you may argue about soccer being big out there but we'll ignore that for now) and was before 2012, when everything started to get really good. 10. Why do they say 12s now? Well, Texas A & M has been using the term "12th man" since the 1920s and they have a trademark on it. After disputes, the Seahawks were allowed to use it but they had to cut out 'man' after a certain time (this year actually!) and pay them a licensing fee. Which means that all those people in Seattle made A & M some good money! Bonus: When Robinson Canó signed with the Mariners in 2013, he hoped to bring good things for Seattle, including a championship. He probably meant for his team but the Seahawks ended up winning the Super Bowl after he came so he already did what he said! We'll just have to wait for the Mariners to win now... Hall of FamersSeattle begins at home against Miami on Sunday, 9/11 at 4:05 pm Miami time and 1:05 pm Seattle time.
