"It's an amazing honor to be here. Just the fact that Rawlings really supports women's sports and supports softball, it speaks volumes. The significance is immeasurable, honestly. Just the strides softball is taking in getting acknowledgement and recognition." -A.J. Andrews, first ever woman to receive the Golden Glove for National Pro FastPitch League. Photos from A.J.'s big night! This is the series that features statistics and your favourite teams! What a great way to learn math! This week we will analyze a popular quarterback in football right now, Dak Prescott. Whether you support "America's team" or not, you cannot escape the bright young talent that this QB is. Which leads to... Does Dak Prescott do better after a win or a loss?Setting up the problemIn order to find out if he does better following a win than a loss, we need to group together his totals from his eight games. LW WW WW WW This problem will definitely be interesting since there's only eight games to analyze and he's lost only one of them. This chart is very helpful in organizing his wins after each event happened. Hypotheses Remember that null means same ability and alternative means something special happened. Null: Prescott's outcomes of each game was independent whether it was following a win or loss. Alternative: Prescott's outcomes were dependent of the previous game being a win or loss and he was streaky. Simulation Time!We first need to calculate what we put in the table, including his wins after a win in Context 1 and then his win after a loss in Context 2. After getting both percentages in the boxes, we will now subtract the two (Context 1 - Context 2) to get the test statistic. The test statistic helps to determine the p-value which will tell us if he was streaky or not. (P-value > .05, plausible that he is NOT streaky) or (P-vale < .05, plausible that he is streaky). With a .5 test statistic, we will now conduct 300 trials to see where he stands, since the bigger the number, the better! Since we have 60 above .5, our p-value is .02 or 2%! ConclusionIt is plausible that Dak Prescott is dependent on the previous outcome of the game. However, we do not have a large enough sample size to fully conclude that Prescott is streaky. We will need to see more games to test this situation. Thanks for playing along and I hope this was interesting!
"It can be very lonely out there in mainstream schools and sports clubs when you have a disability; sometimes you are just different. But meeting a role model -- someone like you who you can trust and who supports and teaches you, helps you meet your goals -- is definitely the way forward." -Ann-Dorte Andersen "Sport is too big to only be about fitness and beauty. I exercise because I love my body, not because I hate it -- not because it is a problem that needs fixing." -Maíra Liguori "In other sports, it's maybe waiting around, or it's too fast and I kind of like the pace of football. It's really exciting and everything." -Auburn Roberson "Never let anybody say you can't. Believe in yourself, pursue your dreams and surround yourself with people who will help you get where you want to be." -Olivia Quigley May Ms. Quigley rest in peace as she passed away yesterday morning at the young age of 25 from breast cancer.
"I will tell you that I learned that from being an athlete. I learned that you just give it your all, there are times you are going to fail, but at the same time, you're just going to keep going. It allows for some really cool things. I always say that, when you're living outside the gray, you're uncomfortable, that's when the magic happens. That's when you get to meet really cool people, that's when you get to do really cool things. Those are the times you get those butterflies in your stomach, and I learned that from being an athlete and pushing forward through the failures." -Nicole DeBlois Greene "We can show people that we are still here, we still have our dances, our songs, and our story is the American story too." -Keya Clairmont "In most sports, momentum is this mysterious intangible. Back-to-back home runs? The crowd goes crazy. Turnovers that lead to threes? Game changers. In rowing, it’s not as easy to see the initial shift of momentum. Inside the boat it’s something you feel before people outside the boat can see. Once it happens, as a spectator, you can see one boat suddenly start to make up ground on another — a move that’s usually spurred on by the coxswain." -Meghan Musnicki Introducing a new series that features statistics and your favourite teams! What a great way to learn math! Were the Cubs a streaky team in the World Series?Three wins in a row after losing seems like it would be streaky and many believed it was. This investigation will find out if the outcomes of the games show streakiness or their outcomes were independent (unaffected by the previous game). HypothesesWe need to test the two different hypotheses involved in sports statistics before we get going on the testing: null and alternative. Null basically believes that nothing truly *special* happened and alternative thinks that something special did happen. Null: The outcomes of the Cubs games were independent and they had the same ability. Alternative: The Cubs were a streaky team. Two Way TableWe had to organize their wins in a different way since they had an odd number and this method involves grouping two outcomes together. We also subtracted 2 wins out of 3 total when they won first by 2 wins out of 3 total when they lost first. We ended up with 0% which is a telling sign.. Simulation Time!We will conduct a simulation using their percentage of successes following a win or loss (0%) and then see how many dots follow after. Once we get that, we see how many out of 50 trials that is and that is our 'p-value'. If the p-value (a determining factor on how many go above the normal) is small and is below 5%, then the alternative is most likely true! But if it goes above 5%, we have ourselves the null hypothesis. Conclusion40/50 dots are above 0%, which gives us a p-value of 80%. This is very large and we will conclude that it is plausible that the outcomes were independent and the Cubs had the same ability throughout the World Series (null hypothesis!). Also, there is not enough evidence to support the hypothesis that the Cubs were streaky. In conclusion, there's a good chance that they just had it in them to play well like always and not even better than before. Thanks for playing along! Hope you learned something from this!

AuthorHi, I'm Jenna and I'm a sports fan! I've been avidly watching sports since 2011 because I found that by watching sports, I would be able to communicate with my dad and brother better. Ever since I got into sports, I've been able to enjoy myself more when I go to sporting events with my family. Archives
